In the 1970s, Tversky and Kahneman formalized cognitive biases as systematic deviations from rational judgment — the observable results of heuristics, mental shortcuts used when judging under uncertainty. Bias is a predictable cost of prioritizing speed and cognitive efficiency over accuracy.
The Availability Heuristic causes you to overestimate the frequency of information that is easily recalled — vivid news stories, dramatic events — regardless of objective statistics. A plane crash dominates your perception of flight risk while you ignore the far greater statistical danger of driving.
The Representativeness Heuristic leads you to judge probability based on how closely something matches a prototype rather than actual base rates. You see a pattern and assume causation where none exists.
The Anchoring Heuristic causes your judgment to be disproportionately influenced by the first piece of information encountered, regardless of its relevance. Once an anchor is set, all subsequent reasoning orbits around it.
Conformity operates through two channels: Normative conformity (adjusting behavior to fit in) and Informational conformity (accepting others' views as truth). The Bandwagon Effect — adopting beliefs because others hold them — is conformity at scale. You buy products, hold opinions, and make decisions not from genuine evaluation but from the gravitational pull of consensus.
The Replication Crisis has exposed the fragility of institutional knowledge itself. Publication bias and selective outcome reporting mean that the scientific literature is skewed toward positive results. Studies that confirm hypotheses get published; those that contradict get buried. The knowledge base you trust is structurally incomplete.
Algorithmic bias scales these human errors across law enforcement, healthcare, and finance through three sources: data bias (historical inequalities encoded in training data), architectural bias (flaws in model design), and human decision bias (researcher preconceptions). This is the modern Idol of the Theater — systematized, automated, and operating at planetary scale.
